Virginia law requires that insurance companies give a discount to drivers age 55 and older who successfully complete an Experienced Driver Course. There are relatively few requirements for qualifying for an experienced driver discount. In general, you will qualify if all of the following apply:

  • You are 55 years of age or older
  • You have confirmed with your auto insurance company that they provide a premium rate reduction for taking an approved Experienced Driver (Driver Improvement) Course.
  • You have a good driving record. Insurance companies can refuse to give you the experienced driver discount if you have a poor driving record.

Per VA state regulations, you must spend a minimum of 8 hours in the course, up to 4 hours per day.

The discount is typically good for three years. We recommend that you confirm the savings and length of the discount with your agent before taking the course.

Once you complete the course you can print your completion certificate and you will submit it to your insurance company to activate the discount.
