Driving Record and Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

You can request a personal driving record or motor vehicle report (MVR) with the designated transportation organization valid in your state of residence.

Your driving record/MVR will contain things such as:

  • Your past driving accidents.
  • Points you have accumulated against on your license.
  • Past traffic offenses, what you were convicted of, and fines.
  • Your DUI record.
  • The status of your driver's license.

Note: Many states will require a small payment in order to connect you with your motor vehicle report. Be suspicious and do your research before using a site that promises free driving records.

Motor vehicle reports are used in background checks, court processes, and for adjusting insurance rates and premiums. Your insurance company may also use them to investigate a claim.

Viewing Your Driving Record/MVR

Your state's transportation office will likely have several different driving records on file, which include:

  • A motor vehicle report.
  • A certified/non-certified driving record.
  • Driving abstracts or driving histories.
  • Online driving records.

The driving record you get could have your entire driving life on there, or it could only have limited years.

Driving Record Information

Your driving record will include information such as:

  • Your name
  • Sex
  • Birthday
  • Height/Weight
  • Eye color
  • Hair color
  • Classification of licenses
  • Special License Endorsements (An example would be a school bus or "S" endorsement.)
  • License Constraints (Some constraints are being required to wear glasses or contacts or only being allowed to drive during the day.)
  • License expiry date
  • Traffic offense details (Details could have the dates of the offenses and possible convictions along with the amount of points added to your driver's license.)

Usually, you can specify whether or not your want to receive a certified or non-certified record. Either report will have the same details; however, a certified driving record could be needed for more official reasons.
